Sam Adams gets a little big for its britches (NY... →
In a world where Nabisco sells “artisan” Wheat Thins, the designation of Samuel Adams as a craft beer seems perfectly fair. But the Boston Beer Company, the brewery that was founded in 1984 and makes Sam Adams, is on the verge of outgrowing its coveted craft status — at least according to the Brewers Association, a national trade group that defines craft brewers in part as producing fewer than...

Brutopia, Montreal QC
I stumbled across Brutopia completely by accident on my last trip to Montreal. Looking for a place to grab a pint on Rue Crescent, this place seemed the most inviting. A truly local establishment, the Habs were showing on the TVs, and Quebequois were lounging on couches cheering on their team to the Stanley Cup. The brewpub carried a series of traditional beers, as well as a slew of homebrewed...

Au Pied de Cochon, Montreal QC
My family and I first visited Au Pied de Cochon thanks to Anthony Bourdain. It’s tucked away on a little street in Montreal called Duluth. The place is known for their foie gras and pork head & feet, but everything they make is delicious. We had Duck in a Can… and it was divine. But enough about the food… this is a beer blog! Au Pied de Cochon also has it’s own brew as well. And that...

Baltimore Beers in Review
So, at the Beer, Bourbon & BBQ festival last weekend, I had the chance to sample over 60 brews. I nearly didn’t make it, but I persevered… and I wanted to share my thoughts of the winners (and the losers) from the festival. And the winner is…… Serum XXIPA, DuClaw Brewing Company. This Double IPA was so smooth I hardly knew I was drinking an IPA… let alone one...

The BB&BBQ Round-up
OH what a festival! I can’t believe we made it ALL 6 HOURS. I don’t think there was a beer left untasted by the time we were done with it. We arrived at the festival around 11:15am, after a quick drive from Philly. The show opened at noon, but they said they’d start giving out wristbands and checking people in around 11:30am. It was a good thing we got to the Maryland State...

Bottling the Beer
Three weeks have passed since I wrote about our brewing… it is now time for the other crucial step: Bottling! This process was mentioned in our instructions as the hardest, and the one requiring the most practice. So of course, we didn’t at all. First we acquired some re-purposed bottles (namely Grolsch, and a spiked lemonade that shall remain nameless), and cleansed them of all...

From The Coolist: In a market dominated by Anheuser Busch and Miller-Coors, finding beauty in beer is a difficult task.  Far beyond the industrialized world of Big Beer, a large and growing group of independent breweries are not only investing in fine, hand-crafted beer, but in sensible design practices as well.  To show just how beautiful beer can be, we’ve scoured the beer world for 10 truly...

Long Trail Night @ Pony Bar
Pony Bar, on 45th and 10th Ave, is one of the great craft beer bars in New York City. Last night they delighted us all with a night dedicated to the craft brewery, Long Trail, who recently acquired two additional microbreweries, Otter Creek and Wolaver’s, their all organic line. Their entire line-up was on tap. Long Trail Brewery is most famous for their Long Trail Ale, but we ventured to...

Chocolate Chip Beer Mash Cookies
While making our first round of beer, I snuck a taste of the barley/malt beer mash during the sparge process. OH MY GOODNESS, it was delicious. It was at that moment I thought, “these must be used in cookies.” So an experiment was conducted. Subsitute Beer Mash for Oatmeal in traditional Chocolate Chip Oatmeal cookies. The cookies pictured above were the result. It was a success, to...
